| PETITION TO SUPPORT RECYCLING LEGISLATION The US Virgin Islands are in dire need of modern solid waste management practices. As a resident of, or visitor to these islands I am acutely aware of how much more we need to do to manage our solid waste stream. Our roadways are littered with bottles and other refuse, much of which eventually makes it way into our coastal waters. If we want healthy waters, live coral reefs and clean beaches to support tourism and marine industries then we need to make sure that our garbage is properly handled and is not haphazardly dumped into landfills, or does not become roadside litter. Bottle deposits and source separation are the norm throughout most of the United States. Here, on our small islands, it is critical that we adopt best practices to manage our solid waste. I strongly urge the USVI Senate to vote on December 20, 2016 to approve the Bottle Deposit bill and the Source Separation and Recycling bill during this last session of the 31st Legislature. |
